About Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a medical system, used for more than 23 centuries to diagnose, treat and prevent illness. Worldwide, there are over three million practitioners. The system is based on regulating the flow of Qi (vital energy), which courses through a network of channels in the body called “meridians”. The flow can be disturbed or blocked by emotional states, poor diet, weather conditions, infections, trauma and hereditary factors.

Acupuncture can be used successfully alongside conventional medicine in the treatment of acute and chronic disease.

Some patients have acupuncture as a preventative medicine and have their energy rebalanced at the change of seasons, thus restoring, maintaining and improving health.

Many complaints can be treated: the nature of acupuncture is to treat the whole person, on levels of mind, body and spirit, not simply to cure symptoms.

How does Acupuncture work?

A full case history is taken at the first consultation (double appointment) and includes the first treatment. Questions will be asked about how your body is functioning and how your diet and lifestyle are contributing to the state of your health. Your pulses will be felt at the wrists in 12 different positions, relating to the twelve organs and their energy channels. Tongue diagnosis is also undertaken and a number of acupuncture points will be selected on the basis of diagnosis.

Pre-sterilised, disposable needles  are inserted into acupuncture points: the needles are totally unlike those used for injections; they are very fine and solid rather than hollow and when inserted give a dull pinch or tingling sensation.

Depending on the needle technique required, different numbers of needles will be needed and they may be inserted momentarily or left in place for approximately 20 minutes.

The action of the needles will remove energy blockages within the channels, strengthen deficient energies and sedate excess energies: this restores a natural harmony, leaving the patient perfectly balanced.
