How Does It Work?
When you book in for your first consultation it will be with Lucy Coffin. Lucy is the Clinical Hypnotherapist, she is also a Registered Nurse and specialises in fertility. She will talk to you about your situation taking into account your health and well-being, medical history, fertility history and that of your partner. She will also discuss how you are feeling in yourself, and how you are finding your journey so far. Based on this Lucy will devise with you a fertility plan incorporating the treatments she feels you would benefit from. Of course if budget is an issue she will help you to plan what works for you and which are the main things you could gain from the various practitioners.
Every therapist has a personal success rate of between 65-100 per cent so we feel very excited about helping you to achieve your family. You have the final say in how your plan will work, and we are passionate about pulling out all the stops. In fact, Lucy has herself undergone successful IVF treatment and absolutely practices what she preaches.
Our Therapies
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a medical system, used for more than 23 centuries to diagnose, treat and prevent illness. World-wide, there are over three million practitioners. The system is based on regulating the flow of Qi (vital energy), which courses through a network of channels in the body called "meridians". The flow can be disturbed or blocked by emotional states, poor diet, weather conditions, infections, trauma and hereditary factors.
Acupuncture has been used in the treatment of infertility in China for centuries. It is safe, effective and has a long and successful history in reproductive medicine. It helps boost fertility by removing toxins such antibiotics or the contraceptive pill, de-stressing the body and helping to prepare the body for conception and pregnancy generally. Recent research by the University of Southampton and the Princess Anne Hospital also shows that IVF success rates are improved for women undergoing acupuncture treatment. In short it can be used for most fertility issues in both men and women and is fast becoming a staple part of many couples fertility treatment.
Clinical Hypnotherapy
You may be surprised to see Clinical Hypnotherapy as a link with fertility. In fact it is highly effective both physically and emotionally. Through simple relaxation techniques you completely direct yourself in a highly focused and aware state to tap into your own body systems and influence them to return to homeostasis (a normal healthy balance). You can learn to get rid of unwanted side effects from fertility drugs as well as help your body learn how to use the drugs efficiently. This is particularly pertinent for women who are not ovulating naturally and are taking synthetic hormones to try to get the body to do so. In simple terms you are able to teach and guide your own body.
There is also an easy relaxation technique for In Vitro Fertilisation which relaxes the soft muscles of the uterus and inhibits involuntary spasms. The reduction of these maximises the chances of the embryo implanting rather than being expelled. A clinical trial indicated that this improved success rates by around 50%.
Clinical Hypnosis can also help you to release unconscious blocks which may be hindering conception. This is very common in women who have had a previous traumatic birth experience or even an abortion which they still find deeply upsetting. It can help you to find a positive focus and improve your mood so that you are in a good calm place in which to conceive. Most couples find subfertility highly stressful which sadly then has a negative impact on trying to conceive anyway. Self-hypnosis is a great skill to learn for life in general and has been shown to have a significantly positive impact on people using it as part of their fertility plan.
Reflexology
Reflexology is a form of foot massage which is based on the principle that reflex points on the feet correspond directly with organs and structures in the body. Energy flows freely through the body but any blockage can cause problems which reflexology can restore. The feet are massaged methodically to incorporate every part, so as to ensure all the reflex points are included. Any tender areas indicate a possible ailment within the correlating area of the body, and by massaging the feet any blockage of energy is released enabling it to flow freely again. This restores balance and promotes self-healing by realigning the mind and body to ensure harmony and maximise the body's own ability to restore itself.
Special attention and techniques are used to restore the areas associated with fertility, namely the thyroid, pituitary gland, uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes.
Natural Nutrition
A healthy pregnancy requires a healthy mind and a healthy body. If the environment in which a new baby is to be created in is toxic, stressed and malnourished it will seriously affect the chance of conception. Your diet is the foundation for your health and a combination of optimum nutrition and appropriate supplementation, is critical for the reproductive process. These will have a positive effect on the body and mind and promote a hospitable environment in which to create a new life. A nutrition programme will firstly look at detoxifying the body, rectifying nutrient deficiencies and addressing underlying health problems. Then the focus of the treatment will be to look at key nutrients that promote fertility. This treatment programme has already been proved to be highly successful. Statistics have shown that couples with a previous history of infertility who made changes in their lifestyle, diet and took nutritional supplements had an 80% success rate.
Yoga
Yoga can also assist couples who are having difficulty getting pregnant. It has been proven that stress can have a big impact on fertility and failed attempts themselves become an additional strain. Yoga is a wonderful way to restore calm and balance to the nervous system and so reduce stress and anxiety. A regular yoga practice also helps to nourish the reproductive organs, balance hormones, detoxify the body and promote health and fitness. The yoga postures and breathing practices empowers couples as it helps them become more in tune with their own natural rhythms and the body's innate healing potential. The cumulative effect is a sense of inner peace and the cultivation of a nurturing environment in which a new life can grow.
Colonic Hydrotherapy
Colonic Hydrotherapy is another therapy you wouldn't automatically associate with fertility, yet poor digestion is a huge culprit for reducing the function of the reproductive system. As highlighted in the nutrition information above, the gut must be working efficiently in order to absorb the nutrients from food and supplements and use them effectively. Many women do not think about the vitamins their body needs in terms of optimising fertility, yet toxins have a significant impact on the DNA of cells, including those in eggs and sperm. Many vitamins play a key role in aiding implantation of the embryo, and in regulating the hormones.
When preparing for conception cleansing is perfect preparation to help renew your body and blood, as well as aids the liver of removing toxins and excess hormones. Colonic hydrotherapy is ideal to jump start any cleansing program and aid your body reaching homeostasis.
Chiropractic
Chiropractic care has been shown in several journals to help improve fertility. Chiropractic is used to help create a well-balanced and functioning pelvis allowing a neutral position for the pelvic floor, which holds the uterus in place. The pelvic floor muscles attach from the front of the pelvis to the back of the pelvis and can cause torsion to the uterus if imbalanced. Chiropractors can detect dysfunction in the spine & pelvis from poor posture, stress, accidents & falls, they can also find impingements of the spinal nerves and tension in the muscles. During chiropractic treatments which are non-invasive and gentle the small adjustments applied to the low back may help improve the function of the nerves that exit from the lumbar spine, the areas that these spinal nerves supply not only include the muscles and skin but the reproductive organs too. Therefore if there is reduced interference of messages conveyed from the brain via the spinal cord to the end organs then they will function to their full potential. Once the interference is removed a woman's menstrual cycle can strengthen, which is the action of delivering the egg from the ovary via the fallopian tubes to the uterus. Additionally chiropractic may help reduce stress in the rest of the body, which may play a huge factor in enabling conception. The adjustments to the spine will help improve the function of the surrounding muscles, particularly those that become tight from stress across the shoulders. Gentle releases across the abdomen and reflex points on the diaphragm may help improve alignment and reduce tension held in the body. Dry needling techniques using acupuncture needles may help reduce the tension in the muscles improve the energy flow of the body.
If you are not trying to conceive yet but are thinking of having a baby in the near future chiropractic care would be great for you to try, as this treatment may help improve your body's function and make the process more enjoyable and less stressful.
