Chiropractic and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition that causes pain, pins and needles, burning or tingling feeling in the hand and fingers, or even in both hands and fingers! When considering treatment for this debilitating condition, consider Chiropractic care.
Symptom of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
• Gradual onset usually starts of worse at night or early morning
• Tingling, numbness and pain in the thumb, index, middle and ½ the ring finger
• Dull ache in forearm/ upper arm
• Reduced sensitivity to touch in the hand
• Weakness and wasting of the muscles around the thumb
Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by compression of the median nerve that travels in the hand and wrist to supply the muscles allowing you to feel, move and grip objects.
As it enters the wrist through the narrow carpal tunnel the median nerve can become compressed. It is not know why it becomes compressed but a family history of carpal tunnel syndrome, a history of wrist injury or overuse,
Rheumatoid arthritis and even pregnancy are suggested to increase the risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome. In pregnant patients, carpal tunnel usually resolves within 3 months of giving birth.
Chiropractic care can help to treat carpal tunnel syndrome by allowing the nerve to flow more freely through its pathway from the neck into the arm and hand. Manipulation to the neck can provide a lot of relief along with manipulation to the wrist and elbow to try and increase the movement in the joints which can be hugely beneficial.
Soft tissue work to the surrounding muscles can help reduce tension in overactive muscles alongside other chiropractic techniques and exercise to help reduce the symptoms of carpal tunnel. If there is loss of strength in the thumb muscles, chiropractic can help to regain the strength as well as ensure the wrist range of motion is regained to reduce stiffness in the wrist. Furthermore, advice on ways to modify daily activities such as desk position at work, can have great benefits for people suffering with carpal tunnel syndrome.
