What is the difference between Chiropractic and other therapies?

At Lilliput Health, the phone is frequently ringing with patients asking “who should I see?” and “what’s the difference between Chiropractic care and Physiotherapy?” This blog aims to give a more detailed overview about what to expect from seeing a Chiropractor and to dispel the myth that all Chiropractors treat is back pain….!

What exactly is Chiropractic?

According to the General Chiropractic Council (GCC), chiropractic is “a health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health”. Let’s take a look at the 3 main components of Chiropractic care and explain them further; diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the Musculoskeletal system.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis begins with a thorough history of your current complaint, alongside your previous medical history and any relevant family history. This, alongside an appropriate physical examination utilising a combination of orthopaedic, neurological and functional special tests gives us a very clear and detailed picture of your complaint. Then we can work out what exactly is wrong, why it is likely to have started and how we can best treat and prevent the condition from reoccurring in the future.

Treatment

Chiropractors at Lilliput Health use a combination of different treatments depending on the complaint and what is best for the patient through an evidence based approach to care. That means we use the most up to date research to put together your treatment plans in order to achieve the best, lasting results in the shortest amount of time. Our techniques include; spinal manipulation and mobilisation, dry needling, trigger point therapy, sacro occipital technique and shockwave therapy.

Prevention

Once the pain has gone and the tissues are beginning to function properly, our Chiropractors at Lilliput Health will address ways in order to prevent the problem coming back again. This includes prescribing detailed rehabilitation plans to strengthen and stretch areas to ensure proper mobility and function.

Mechanical Disorders of the Musculoskeletal System

The musculoskeletal system is the combination of the muscular and skeletal systems working together and includes the bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments of the whole body. This includes everything from your big toe, to your knee, hips, elbow, hands, jaw and everything in between! That being said, this highlights and emphasises the fact that Chiropractors are not solely excellent in treating spinal conditions, they are experts in musculoskeletal health; your whole body!
