What do Glasses, Feet and the Leaning Tower of Pisa have in common?

Insoles, orthotics, inserts, orthoses, the weird things you put in your shoes. Whatever you want to call them, they are gaining in popularity, but why!?

Glasses for your Feet?

Insoles, orthotics, inserts, orthoses, the weird things you put in your shoes. Whatever you want to call them, they are gaining in popularity, but why!?

The truth is our feet are the base and foundation of our bodies. Good strong base, good strong structure. Rubbish foundation? Just look how The Leaning Tower of Pisa ended up!

It’s true, how our feet work has a huge biomechanical effect on the rest of our structure. Poor foot function can lead to knee pain, hip pain, lower back issues, shoulder and even neck problems! Luckily, society is starting to clock the significant impacts our feet can have on the body.

So, everyone should just go out and by some insoles, right? WRONG! Orthotics are like glasses. They need to be prescribed. You wouldn’t walk into an opticians, pick up the first pair of glasses and say “these are good” as the prescription could give you double vision or increased strain. It’s the same for orthotics. There is a plethora of different mechanical issues that can happen in the feet, and you may have more than one disfunction.

That’s why it’s so important to be checked by a professional.

During an initial assessment with a chiropractor at Total Therapy we always start with you standing. This is for lots of different reasons, but one of them is so we can assess any obvious mechanical issues with the feet. We can then show you how this impacts the rest of your body. If necessary, we can cross refer you to our Podiatry team, who will be able to do a detailed examination of just the feet, and prescribe insoles if needed.

So, before you ram the inserts you brought from Amazon into your favourite pair of shoes, take some time to think “are these the correct prescription?”.

Book now with one of our Chiropractors for a full neuro-orthopaedic examination for any musculoskeletal concerns – you may be surprised what you find out!
